Photographing architecture is not as easy as it seems.
The right angle, the right mood, the right glow – photographing a building is like taking a picture of a woman. A good photographer’s task is to turn the ordinary into the stunning by seeking that sometimes hidden feature that makes every object or person special in some way.
The words of Winston Churchill – “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us” – come into mind every time I come across a particular architectural style.
As I click my camera, I ask myself who I would be were I to live in the place I am photographing. Would I be the same Tullio Valente that I am in my hometown of Trieste, Italy, were I to live in a skyscraper in Singapore or a whitewashed house in Greece?
